Cozy neigborhood spots to trendy or bohemian places for culture minded people of different ages. Less obvious, some out of the way hangouts in Helsinki. For balance: some upscale bars & clubs, too.

IN TÖÖLÖ:

KORJAAMO BAR & LOUNGE (also called the "culture factory
Korjaamo") is a former indoor railyard/repair shop for trams. A
cozy place that has an art gallery and sometimes features bands.
The bar serves lunch, "pick-me-up" breakfast foods during
weekends & culture events in the evenings. The wine list is put
together with an eye on the latest Viini (wine) magazine "top
picks". The bar extends out to a pleasant beer garden. There is
an art gallery, open daily, and a picnic park, open for everyone, in
the courtyard. Parvi, the upstairs lounge, can be hired for private
events. "Friendly service & fresh food ingredients".
Töölönkatu 51 b,00250 Helsinki, tel: 020 7417 000

IN TÖÖLÖ, continued from above...:
MULTICULTURAL:

KAAPELITEHDAS  (=cable factory in English)
Historic cable factory (designed by architect Wäinö G. Palmquist
& built 1939-1944) turned cool art & culture center. Since the
end of 1980's Nokia (owner since late 1960's) started renting the
large, bright spaces to artists. It is now an independent,
multicultural center for art and other cultural activities, hosting
over 100 artists and photographers, as well as art studios, art
schools, dance theatres, small enterprises, two radio stations,
3 museums and 8 galleries
. Kaapelitehdas also periodically
hosts different music events.

There is also a popular cafe & restaurant, "Hima & Sali" at
Kaapelitehdas.
Tallberginkatu 1 C 15, Helsinki 00180, Finland
Tel: +358 9 4763 8305

IN EIRA:
A few places that are popular among artists and theater folks:
CUPLA, on Runeberginkatu 28, 00100 Helsinki,  tel: 09-440 324,
HAS CLOSED.
"kupla" (here playfully spelled with a "c") =  "bubble" in English

VASTARANNAN KIISKI  Runeberginkatu 26, 00100 Helsinki,
tel: (09) 492 610
Excellent beer selection. 14 tap beers, from light lager to dark
stout, in addition to a large bottle selection.
The name is idiomatic Finnish that roughly translates to
"The Obdurate Contrarian". A transliteration actually yields
"the blacktail perch of the opposite shore".
Vastaranta = "opposite shore".

"
Kiiski" = "blacktail perch", a.k.a. ruffe, pope or redfin darter
Vastarannan Kiiski is actually part of a beer/fish restaurant chain.
Check out Punavuoren Ahven ("the Perch of Punavuori" = Red
Mountain)
and Janoinen Lohi  ("janoinen" = "thirsty" , "lohi" =
"salmon")
of the same chain.
Again, we do not readily promote chains, but these cutely named
fish/beer restaurants have an excellent beer selection -and our picky
bar connoisseur in Helsinki approves.
to all the "fish" restaurants.

The legendary
SEA HORSE (locally, lovingly called "Sikala", i.e., "Pig Stye").
It is famous, among other things, for its fried herring w. mashed
potatoes. Sea Horse is also a pretty popular spot for art opening
after-parties.
Kapteeninkatu 11, 00140 Helsinki, tel (09) 628 169

Across the street you find the
KOM-RAVINTOLA, the KOM-teatteri (Kom-theater)
cafe/restaurant, a classier but cozy place for the "cultural crowd".
Open for lunch and dinner. Short menu (tasty last time we tested)
and very basic wine list. "Kom" also offers a good selection of
international coffees and "coffee drinks". Kapteeninkatu 26,
00140 Helsinki,
tel: 9-684 6224

Their web site is in Finnish only.

IN KALLIO:

Explore the old working class neighborhood, Kallio, where lots of
students and artists now live.
Helsinginkatu
(Helsinki Street) is filled with cheaply priced bars,
most of them depressing dives, which we do not recommend.
But there are some more "trendy" places in the area worth visiting:

Bar KOLA
Relaxed, bohemian, elegant, trendy (but not too trendy),
cozy & bright. "The living room of Kallio". Nice additional touch: the
exhibition on the wall that changes every month.
Helsinginkatu 13, Helsinki. Sorry, no web page

Bar RYTMI Popular place, friendly staff, good music.
Toinen Linja 2, Helsinki

In TÖÖLÖ, RAJASAARI (a bit out of the way):

VIRUS CLUB  Finnish Swedish venue for
Swedish speakers.
Excellent stand up comedy and theatre.
For tickets: 09-440 224, email: viirus@viirus.fi
